Treo 650 tips and tricks
Posted: Friday, March 17, 2006 12:31 PM (EST)

Alright, we're launching a new weekly feature we'd meant to get going ages ago: Best _______ Tips and Tricks. Each week we're going to pick a different gadget and then pass the mic over to you guys, we're looking for your best suggestions for getting the most out of said tech toy, be it some super-helpful app you've found, a tip for extending battery life, or just a sweet trick that you're dying to show off to the rest of us.

For the first one we figured we'd go with the Treo 650 — what else? — which just celebrated its first birthday. Have at it!

5. The engadget post on how to get a free 128 meg SD card from Palm was great. I've since bought a 1gig-er, but free is free! here's the link. I think you can still do it.

Cingular Bluetooth Dial-up Networking Hack. Essential for quick on-the-go laptop net access.

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000180029659/

Watch yer usage! DUN is not officially included in the Cingular data plan, and they can nail you if they see monstro downloads. I have heard tales of people getting hit with $3000 cell bills after slurping down big BitTorrent files through their Treos.

16. FieldPlus by Ansel Rognlie is a freeware alternative to the older TreoSelecText by RaNo Software. Either of these programs is invaluable for text selection and navigation on either a Treo 600 or 650 -- the added functionality is so fundamental that most Treo enthusiasts completely forget these apps are not built-in features.

As far as interesting tricks, if you go to the Network panel under Preferences and select Options-->View Log, you can ping websites! Simply type "ping www.engadget.com" (for instance), hit the return/enter key on the keyboard and your Treo will fetch a bit of geekery for you.

32. Cool tip: Converting nearly any video content to XviD and watching it on my Treo 650. I use Pocket DVD Studio (http://www.pqdvd.com/) for the conversion and TCPMP (http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/about) for playback.

Software to convert your DVDs and TiVo'd shows to 360x240 XviD format: $29.95

Software to play back your new XviD file on your Treo 650: Free

38. Goodlink

Bound to be one of the best programs for the treo...though not one of the cheapest.

Also, Verichat, Directory Assistant, PDAnet.

PdaNet was great before BT DUN was released.

39. FlightStatus: Totally rocks! if you know your flight number or source and destination you can bring up either your flight and gate or a listing of flights. Saved me more than one time. It's free and I have had NO problems what so ever. The app from American Airlines requires syncing and loading of a bunch of flight times. Not as useful unless you don't have signal.

41. Response to #18

Not all the carriers have unlocked BT dialup networking. I'm using verizon, running the latest ROMS, and it was not unlocked until I added the BT patched rom. But for other carriers that have unlocked it, yes you are right.

42. If you use Blogger and want to update your blog through Blazer rather than email, go here:

http://avantblog.dentedreality.com.au/index.php

This simple little web site lets you log into your Blogger account and post to your blog with HTML tags included, something VersaMail won't let you do because of limitations with Blogger's email gateway. You'll have to hand-code the tags, but if you use large repeat tags, you can put the code in a memo, then copy that code from the memo and paste it into Blazer. I do that quite a bit when I'm taking snapshots in sports bars for my football blog. (I upload the snapshots using VFS-FTP.)

AvantBlog is a decent work-around for Blogger users until someone releases blogging software that works correctly with the Atom API. mo:blog 3.0 will supposedly support Atom, but it won't be out for a few months from the looks of things, and no other coder wants to tackle it. (Then again, I don't feel much like tackling Wordpress or Movable Type, either, so there you go...)

BTW, I second PocketTunes and Softick Card Export II, both apps that I bought and use regularly. I also recommend ZLauncher, which lets you run Palm apps off your SD card. I have a 1GB card that holds a lot of apps right now.

43. #33- only problem with goodlink is that it doesn't allow you to send email attachments! now that's a pain!

Remember, you can double tap your shift key or your blue key to put it into lock mode for capitals, numbers, or punctuation.

45. Directory Assistant by Rick Whit: http://home.triad.rr.com/rlwhitt/palm/
Avoid directory assistance fees from wireless carrier

Butler - this utility allows you to change the auto-lock timeout, switch between apps, and program your volume buttons.

PockeTunes - Use with LightWav to control ringtones with Caller ID; also use to listen to music (no iTunes integration tho...)

Scrabble- Highly addictive; fun to play against the computer or a partner

46. I'll second the person who mentioned Volume Care. I just got it a few days ago and I can hear though the earpiece much better.

I havn't seen "Ringo" mentioned. A nice little app if you like mp3 ringtones.

For the Diabetics out there: Accucheck Compass. It's a PC diary with connectivity to your blood sugar meter via an IR port (has to be an Accucheck model, I assume). Also has a manual entry funtion. Links automatically with the PC on hotsync.

FastHide lets you hide icons for programs you don't want to see (Like "Welcome", "Quick Tour" etc).

Documents To Go works nicely to keep copies of word docs on your Treo, also links on hotsync to check for changes, so the docs are always current.

And a question for people: Ever since I did a sim update several months back, the screen times out much faster than I like it. I have it set for 3 minutes, but it turns off in less than a minute, especially when I'm using the web browser. Anyone have this problem and a suggested fix?

47. VoiceDialIt is the premier voice dialing application for the Treo 600 and Treo 650 smartphone. This simple-to-use application allows you to dial your existing contacts with ease by simply stating their name. Within minutes you can train contacts and start dialing with your voice.

51. in Blazer:

hit space bar to get to the URL bar.

Free software:

- Documents2go is included on the software CD for sprint and Cingular, don't know about VZW.

- kmaps http://www.alealea.com need JVM

- Google Local Mobile (need JVM) is kind of buggy now but should be extremely useful when it's stable http://google.com/glm For carrier, select 'other', for phone select 'generic', then 'Advanced MIDP2'.

- opera mini: someone else already mentioned, but it's worth mentioning again. it's so fast and good at rendering that you gotta wonder why Palm bothered with Blazer.

52. For any palm, really: Natara "Bonsai" To Do list organizer. It is one of the very few apps that lets you have a "percent complete" instead of a static yes/no button. It does tons more, including sync with the desktop.

Free trial, $16 for standalone on palm, $35 with windows desktop sync app.

54. **

Palm GPS Navigator

This is a killer app for any Treo 650 user. It features award winning TomTom Navigator 5 and it runs great on a Treo 650. The Bluetooth GPS receiver allows you to take it out of your car. It includes a handy car cradle too.

Buying a TomTom GO 700 costs $899. The Palm GPS Navigator costs $249. Buying this and a new Treo 650 costs less than the GO700! The TomTom Navigator 5 software is the same on both the GO and Treo 650.

Check it out at www.palm.com
It is 20% off right now too! What a deal!

55. TiVoToGo On the Treo 650!

As #2 Said, TCPMP is great ... I use this to watch TiVo recordings on my Treo.

Get TVHarmony from http://www.tvharmony.com/main/products.php and also get the TiVo2Palm converter. This will interface with TiVo Desktop 2.1 or greater to schedule downloads from the tivo and transcode them to palm format. Then just pop them on a memory card and watch them on the treo!

56. A quick note about Goodlink:

We just installed Goodlink here and found out it takes over your contacts. This means that any contacts not listed within Outlook contacts will not show when they call you.

Plus, the Exchange GAL is not available under contacts. Only a cache of contacts which are people who other Goodlink users have emailed within the company will show up under contacts. So there's no centralized contacts management system for all the phones.

There is a workaround but it involves publishing public contacts, etc. Kind've annoying.

Otherwise, so far it's been a decent program. We got it for free as a promo with Cingular.

69. You can hear the voice with the TomTom GPS software on your 650. Don't get the Palm GPS because that uses an older chipset. Buy the TomTom bundle at www.semsons.com and choose from a number of SiRF III devices.

Control those keyboard lights with KBLightsOff (www.lilapps.com).

Tip: Hold the Option key and press the right shift key to quickly dim (but not turn off) the screen and keyboard backlights.

72. TV on your Treo?

I just installed this program and signed up for 1 month service to see if I liked it. It works well and has a huge WOW factor. I suggest using headphones or ear piece to hear well. It’s great for people that travel or have time to kill.

Check out: MobiTV on the Treo 650 @ http://www.mobitv.com/treo.html

Make sure you have unlimited data plan since it uses that service. The MobiTV is $9.99 a month no contract. If anyone has questions please ask. I will check back.

I also use and love
*Handmark Pocket Express – maps, phonebook, news, stocks, etc…
*PdaNet – Connect to internet anywhere on laptop
*QuickIM – MSN Messenger
*Voice Signal – Voice dialing

74. I had to browse to http://mini.opera.com with my 650 (which the site recognized) to access the prc. I found no mention of Palm or Treo on the Opera while browsing from a desktop. I saved the file it linked to, ran it and was up and running. I was a bit disappointed that I actually had to touch the screen to access the menu.

As for rec's

77. Buy Pocket Tunes, Use WMP and iTunes to Sync music/podcasts to Treo automatically on connect.

1. Pocket Tunes syncs with WMP
2. Use iTunes to download your podcasts weekly/daily - whatever
3. Make sure files are being saved to a directory that WMP is monitoring.
4. Use WMP's 'SmartPlaylists' to create a playlist that only shows 'Date Added' 'After' 'Last 7 Days'
5. Set Genre to 'Podcast'
5. Include/Check that Playlist in Sync Settings for the device under the Sync tab
6. Set the cable button under Pref on Treo to start PTunes - not Hotsync (use 'Blue'/button for Hotsync)
7. PTunes will connect to WMP and automatically start the sync process.
8. I will remove all podcasts that don't match the SmartPlaylist criteria.

(Will not auto do video files yet) :(

This and SharkMSG make the Treo AWESOME!!!

78. If you're a long-time Palm user you might be wondering how to type the shortcut key on a Treo Keyboard (the one used for macros that looks like a script lower-case "L"). You can reach the shortcut key by pressing "S" and then pressing the ALT button 4 times and select the shortut character with the center button on the d-pad. You can follow the shortcut key with "ds" and you have a date stamp, "ts" for time stamp, or "dts" for date-time stamp.

84. First, I want to throw another vote in for old favorites: TPCMP, Card Export II, KeyCaps600, iSilo, and KMaps.

But also three others that haven't been mentioned yet:

1) PalmTextSync.
It provides automated synchronization of text files on your Desktop with DOC-format files on your Treo. (SiEd or other free editors can edit DOC format files.)

This lets you carry portable copies of many lists (todo lists, media to read, projects, nots), without having to mess around with the Palm Desktop. Ah, sweet plain text...

2) MetrO.
A free subway system routefinder. No maps, but schedules are available for many cities, as well as the bus networks for some cities, including the night buses in London, which is invaluable after the Tube shuts down.

3) reverse Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking.
Yes, it's a bit of a nuisance to setup, but it's a onetime thing if you're running a home server. Once it's done, your Treo has free data access in your home. Useful for those stuck with the extortionate GPRS rates in the UK.

True PUSH email for Sprint Users on MSExchange:

3) drag the file to the bottom window of palmOne Quick Install (Expansion Card)
4) Sync your Treo
5) Use FileZ, go to \External Card\PALM\Launcher and rename the movie.prc back to movie.avi.

Buy a card reader. They're upwards of $12 at any major electronics/computer store.

122. Just a followup to the very second comment which recommended the excellent "TCPMP" to watch videos...

I know the new iPods have been getting all the hype for portable video, but I truly think the Treo 650 + TCPMP is a _better_ platform:
* Obviously, the Treo's screen is bigger.
* Second, although the Treo's processor has trouble with the iPod's H.264 standard, TCPMP can play most other codecs great, which means you don't necessarily have to convert your older files, unless you want smaller files.
* Most important, the battery on the Treo 650 absolutely slays the iPods. They're rating the best iPod at "up to 3 hours" of video playback. I played a movie on my Treo 650 for _4 hours_ and still had 50% battery left -- I've never had the patience to test the battery to failure, but I'm guessing that it's good for 6-8 hours.
* TCPMP is FREE!
* Did I mention one less device to carry around? Schweet...

Note: For free conversion, I recommend AutoGK (http://www.autogk.me.uk/) -- using AutoGK, you can fit several full length movies onto a 1GB SD card. (Storage space is the one category where the iPods still have a huge advantage.)

I know I'm raving like a paid shill, but I have no affiliation with any of the above -- just a happy, happy user. =)

125. Here's a cute trick that I use to remember which position means what for the speaker "mute" switch on the top edge of the 650. This is very useful when you are in a dark room or need to change the setting while the Treo is in your pocket:

When the switch is moved closer to the antenna (a source for a different type of "signal") then the Treo will emit sounds. So, simply associate: antenna/signal/sound.

When the switch is moved away from the antenna there is a lack of sound output.

127. LordSurge,

the Treo 650 screen is smaller than the iPods. But other than that, I totally agree with your assessment. My Treo650 is a much better protable video platform as long as you have enough storage. The screen is brighter and more vibrant, and you can set the 5-way to function as 30s skip and 8s replay buttons to match the TiVo controls (best for skipping commercials in TV content).

140. I use GoodLink with my corp email, but I do not want to use the GoodLink contacts app. It seems GoodLink hijacks the Palm Contacts app. Is there a way to remove this hijack so that "contacts" is the Palm app and not the Goodlink app and keek Goodlink for email?

141. Best thing I ever got for my treo is a 1 Gig Sandisk Ultra II Plus USB memory card. Same size as a regular SD card, so it will fit in the treo, and flips open to expose a USB port, and fit into any computer. I can plug it into a friends computer, drag MP3's onto the card, and play them for the rest of the night. Also good for saving pic's and doc's without the hotsync software. I'm sure some guru out there will figure out a way to hotsync everything using this card, and eliminate that huge cord that I can never find, but I can't figure it out. I know that a regular card plus a card reader does the same thing, but I like being able to plug into any USB port I find.

142. Love my new treo! I do not have a memory card right now and am not sure if I will need one. My question is I try and play a file (Dallas Cowboy Site)which requires real player (I believe real player is on the palm)and I get a message that my device does not support this file and do I wish to save to my card. If I get a card will the treo then play the file???

143. After a ton of thinking and pondering I finally came up with it. Use Salling Clicker to control iTunes on your Powerbook. Set your Powerbook to not sleep when closed. Close up the Powerbook and put it in your backpack. Use your handy Bluetooth headset (on your Powerbook) to listen to music on your Powerbook while controlling it all from your Treo.

You might not get the best quality but technically you got an Ipod with (in my case) 40gb of music all of which can be controlled from your Treo

Good day, www.stevelu.com users! I'm going to talk about Sexual Problems. It can help many men who have erectile dysfunction get and keep an erection when they become sexually excited(stimulated). VIAGRA helps a man with erectile dysfunction get an erection when he is sexually excited. HOW SEX AFFECTS THE BODY When a man is sexually excited, the penis rapidly fills with more blood than usual. The penis then expands and hardens. This is called an erection. After the man is done having sex, this extra blood flows out of the penis back into the body. The erection goes away. If an erection lasts for a long time (more than 6 hours), it can permanently damage your penis. You should call a doctor immediately if you ever have a prolonged erection that lasts more than 4 hours. Some conditions and medicines interfere with this natural erection process. The penis cannot fill with enough blood. The man cannot have an erection. This is called erectile dysfunction if it becomes a frequent problem. HOW VIAGRA WORKS VIAGRA enables many men with erectile dysfunction to respond to sexual stimulation. When a man is sexually excited, VIAGRA helps the penis fill with enough blood to cause an erection. HOW TO TAKE VIAGRA VIAGRA comes in different doses (25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg). Take VIAGRA about one hour before you plan to have sex. Beginning in about 30 minutes and for up to 4 hours, VIAGRA can help you get an erection.
